Classic Deli Hoagie

Ever wanted a really great sandwich but didn’t want to A. leave the house or B. spend $13 on some slices of bread with a few measly cold cuts and limp lettuce? And probably not even get some chips? This ticks all the boxes of a great deli sub without the price, waiting in line AND you can add anything you want – fill it up or leave it plain. Whichever you decide it will have your taste buds dancing, belly full and wallet left at home!

Recipe

  • 1/2 loaf of Italian bread
  • 2 TBS mayo
  • 2 TBS mustard
  • 2 TBS Italian seasoning
  • 2 tsps apple cider vinegar (or red wine vinegar)
  • Lettuce – torn in pieces or left whole (your preference!)
  • Tomatoes – sliced
  • 4-5 slices of ham, turkey, roast beef, salami, or bologna
  • 2 slices of Cooper Sharp cheese (optional)
  • Cucumbers, carrots, pickles, or onions – sliced (optional)

This sandwich is super easy to make, and perfect for crowds because you can scale it up or down depending on your lunch crowd!

Slice the bread in half lengthwise and set aside.

In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, mustard, Italian seasoning and vinegar. Once it’s nicely incorporated, spread it across the cut sections of the bread. Layer the ham (or whatever deli meats you want) and cheese on one side, and the lettuce and tomatoes on the other. You can also add your other veggies or cold cuts at this time. Gently place the two halves together and cut into slices. I recommend about 1 inch cuts so that you can actually bite into the sandwich, but you do you!

Serve with potato chips (if you’re in Northeast PA, try Middleswarth BBQ – they are the best!) a side salad, or cut up fruit.

Tip – if making for a crowd, use toothpicks to secure the sandwich pieces. If you’re making this ahead of time, wait until shortly before the event to slice, then add the lettuce and tomatoes. This will help keep the bread nice and soft instead of soggy.

Bon Appetit!
